Iran Rules Out Taking Part in US Talks
The announcement came shortly before U.S. President Donald Trump said Washington would extend a temporary ceasefire to allow more time for diplomacy, as the current two-week truce is due to expire Wednesday night.
Media reported that Pakistani mediators were formally notified of Tehran’s stance, describing the move as aimed at fully safeguarding the rights of the Iranian people.
The agency added that, despite what it described as speculation and messaging from U.S. officials and media, Iran’s delegation would not travel to Pakistan for Wednesday’s scheduled talks, citing reasons already communicated to Washington through Islamabad.
According to media, ongoing U.S. naval pressure — including a blockade — and what it called “excessive demands” during recent exchanges prevented meaningful progress between the two sides. The report also cited “hostile actions” and alleged breaches of commitments as factors behind Iran’s refusal to attend the next round of negotiations.
Trump, however, said the United States had postponed a planned strike on Iran, giving Tehran time to present what he described as a “unified proposal” ahead of possible talks.
Meanwhile, Mahdi Mohammadi, an advisor to Iran’s parliament speaker on strategic affairs, said following Trump’s Truth Social post that the ceasefire extension is a "ploy" to buy time for a potential surprise attack, warning that continued U.S. maritime pressure would trigger a response.
Talks Stall After First Round
Delegations from Iran and the United States were expected to meet again in Pakistan this week after holding an initial round of talks in Islamabad on April 11–12, which ended without agreement.
The breakdown underscores escalating tensions between the two countries, as diplomatic efforts remain fragile amid military pressure and mutual distrust.
