US Says Talks with Iran Continue Despite Trump Rejection of Peace Plan
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that he has reviewed Iran’s proposed plan to end the ongoing conflict but concluded that it is not acceptable.
“It’s not acceptable to me. I’ve studied it, I’ve studied everything — it’s not acceptable,” Trump told Israeli media outlet Kan News.
Despite this public rejection, US special envoy Steve Witkoff indicated that diplomatic communication with Tehran is still ongoing. Speaking to CNN, he said, “We’re in conversation,” when asked about the status of discussions.
According to reports, Trump had previously posted on his social media platform Truth Social that he would examine Iran’s proposal, while also expressing doubt about Tehran’s intentions. He claimed that Iran had “not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to humanity, and the world, over the last 47 years.”
As stated by reports, Iranian media indicated that Tehran submitted a 14-point counterproposal to an earlier US plan through Pakistani mediation. Iran also confirmed that it has received a response from the United States and is currently reviewing it.
The broader diplomatic process follows a ceasefire that was brokered through Pakistani mediation in early April and later extended indefinitely.
According to general accounts, peace discussions were held in Islamabad last month, although they failed to produce a final agreement, and additional rounds have yet to be scheduled.
Trump also noted that future communication would not necessarily require in-person meetings, saying that discussions are now being conducted remotely rather than through long-distance travel for face-to-face negotiations.
